Safety Surfacing is essential for all playgrounds and must be installed over resilient surfacing. Over 70% of injuries which require hospital treatment are caused by falls onto a hard surface. Cushioned surfaces help protect children from serious injury.

To be effective, the surfacing must cover the complete protective surfacing zone for each playground structure. The depth required will depend on the type of surfacing and the fall height of the equipment.

Numerous types of safety surfacing are available, including loose fill materials such as engineered wood fibre (EWF), pea gravel and sand. However, please note that pea gravel should be washed pea gravel, and sand can be very hard on the surfacing of the equipment. Another options is poured-in-place rubber surfacing or rubber safety tiles. Availability of material, weather conditions, wheelchair accessibility and budget are all factors in deciding which surface type best meets your needs.
